About the city

Nador lies in northeast Morocco on the spectacular Mar Chica lagoon, one of the largest in the Mediterranean. With 160,000+ inhabitants, it is an important trading and port city, and a favourite summer destination for the Moroccan diaspora from Europe, especially the Netherlands and Belgium. Its proximity to Spanish Melilla gives the city a distinctive Spanish flavour.

📜 History

Nador was long a small fishing village and only developed in the 20th century, partly under Spanish influence (Spanish Morocco, 1912–1956). After independence the city grew rapidly, driven by migration and trade with neighbouring Melilla. Today Nador is the commercial centre of the eastern Rif region and a destination of the ferry service from Almería and Sète.
