About the city
Tangier is the gateway between Africa and Europe, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. On clear days you can see the Spanish coast across the strait. With nearly 1 million inhabitants, Tangier is a cosmopolitan port city in full transformation — recent years have brought major investment in the port, the city centre and the new high-speed train link to Casablanca.
📜 History
Tangier has an extraordinarily rich history: founded by the Phoenicians, then Roman, Arab, Portuguese, English (1661–1684 as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry!), and in the 20th century an international zone administered by several European powers. That status made Tangier a free port from 1923 to 1956, beloved of writers and artists such as Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Tennessee Williams and the Rolling Stones.

The Kasbah and medina form the historic heart inside the old walls. The Ville Nouvelle has broad boulevards and the market halls. Marshan is an elegant residential district full of villas. Malabata on the Mediterranean is the booming new holiday area with hotels and beaches.

May–October is excellent for both beach and sightseeing. The ocean influence keeps it from getting too hot. Winters are mild but occasionally rainy.

Tangier has always been a melting pot of cultures — Berbers, Arabs, Spaniards, French, British and Americans. You taste that mix in the food, art, architecture and the special light that drew generations of painters. Today Tangier is one of Morocco's most dynamic cities.
